NEARLY $4M IN FEDERAL GRANTS COMING TO THE V.I.

Sept. 20, 2002 – The territory will be receiving more than $3.8 million in federal grants to be distributed among six government and not-for-profit agencies, Delegate Donna M. Christensen announced Friday from Washington, D.C.
– The Law Enforcement Planning Commission will receive a $1.4 million U.S. Justice Department Byrne Formula grant to control violent and drug-related crime and to support national drug control priorities. LEPC also is to receive a $1.3 million Byrne Law Enforcement Assistance Grant.
– The Health Department is to receive $419,235 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help combat bioterrorism in the territory. The money will go for equipment and salaries for staff working on the Public Health Preparedness and Response for Bioterrorism Program.
– Childworth Support Services for Families, a St. Croix agency, is to receive $200,000 from the Health and Human Services Department for a transitional living program for homeless youth.
– The Housing Authority will get $225,000 from the U.S. Justice Department for its Weed and Seed Program on St. Thomas. The money is to be used to increase police patrols in the Bovoni Housing Community in order to eliminate drug trafficking and reduce illegal weapons; to increase prevention and intervention programs; and to establish neighborhood restoration projects.
– The Grove Place Weed and Seed Program on St. Croix will receive a $275,000 from the U.S. Justice Department to reduce crime and drug-related activity. Funds will go toward prevention, intervention and treatment programs, as well as neighborhood restoration.
– The V.I. Energy Office is to receive $22,000 from the U.S. Energy Department for a power technologies special project.
Efforts to obtain additional information from the local agencies about their grants were unsuccessful.
