Paradise Jam Men's Championship Today, Women's Play Starts Thursday
The 2002 edition of Paradise Jam — the NCAA Division I holiday basketball tournament hosted by UVI — opened to appreciative crowds and a rousing performance from the Charlotte Amalie High School marching band on Friday, Nov. 22. Large crowds turned out for the weekend games. Play in the men's division concludes Monday, Nov. 25 with consolation games beginning at 4 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The championship game begins at 8:30 p.m. and will pit Brigham Young against St. Bonaventure.
Participating men's squads are from Brigham Young University, Kansas State University, the University of Michigan, St. Bonaventure University, the University of Toledo and Virginia Tech University.
The Women's Paradise Jam Tournament opens Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28 with a 4 p.m. game between the nation's top-ranked Duke University Blue Devils and the Hampton University Lady Pirates. The University of Arkansas Lady Razorbacks take on Old Dominion University's Lady Monarchs in a 6:15 p.m. game. The action continues at 8:30 p.m., when the University of South Carolina Gamecocks take on the University of Oregon Ducks.
Women's tournament games continue on Nov. 29 and conclude on Nov. 30. Women's teams involved are the University of Arkansas, Boston College, Duke University, Hampton University, Old Dominion University, the University of Oregon and the University of South Carolina.

Paradise Jam tickets cost $5 for UVI students with ID, $10 for VI residents with ID and $40 for non-residents. UVI faculty and staff members can pre-purchase $5 tickets to Paradise Jam games in advance at the UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus.
"Health Care in the 21st Century" Is Topic of Nursing Leadership Lectures
V.I. native C. Alicia Watlington Georges will be the featured speaker in the next lecture of the UVI Nursing Division's Nursing Leaders Lecture Series, scheduled this week on both UVI campuses. Dr. Georges was to present her lecture at 1 p.m. Nov. 25 in the nursing complex on the St. Croix campus. On Tuesday, Nov. 26, Dr. Georges will speak at 1 p.m. in the Chase Auditorium (Business Administration room 110) on the St. Thomas campus.
The lecture series is sponsored by the Bennie and Martha Benjamin Foundation. For details call 693-1290 on St. Thomas or 692-4014 on St. Croix. Dr. Georges is also scheduled to appear on the Radio One "June's Morning Mix" talk show on Tuesday, Nov. 26. She will be accompanied by Dr. Gloria Callwood, chair of UVI's Nursing Division on the St. Thomas campus. The show on AM 1000 runs from 7:30 to 9 a.m.
Pumpkin Pie Workshop
The Family and Consumer Sciences Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will present "A Pumpkin Extravaganza" on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the Ramona Blades Community Center in Kirwan Terrace. The extravaganza is described as a workshop on how to make and bake a pumpkin pie. An early session will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A late session will run from 4 to 7 p.m. Participant space is limited. Thanksgiving and Fortsberg-Discovery Day Holidays This Week
UVI will be closed this Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29, in observance of Thanksgiving Day and the Fortsberg-Discovery Day Holiday. Dec. 8 will be the last day of classes for the Fall 2002 semester. Final examinations will be conducted during the December 9-15 period. The fall semester officially ends Dec. 15.
Association to Host Dr. Denzil Douglas
UVI's St. Kitts and Nevis Student Association is sponsoring a forum featuring the Prime Minister of the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Denzil Douglas, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Palm Courts Harbour View Hotel on St. Thomas. Dr. Douglas will address the free movement of nationals within the member countries of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
David Titley, president of UVI's St. Kitts and Nevis Student Association, said his group is delighted that Douglas has accepted an invitation to come to St. Thomas and address this issue. "Legislation on this topic that was passed this year in the OECS counties can directly affect all of us as students when we complete our studies and return to our homelands," Titley said.
As current chairman of the OECS, the prime minister is in an ideal position to discuss not only the issues of free movement, but also how this will affect other issues such as citizenship, employment opportunities, land ownership and the assimilation of non-nationals. The forum is open to the public. Nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis and other OECS member countries are encouraged to attend. St. Thomas/St. John Alumni Plan Recruitment Social Dec. 7
UVI faculty, staff and students are invited to join the UVI St. Thomas/ St. John Alumni Chapter and friends for the fourth annual Recruitment Social at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Petite Pump Room in the Edward Wilmot Blyden Wharf on St. Thomas. All Invited to Join UVI Troupe for 2003 Crucian Festival
The "early-bird registration period" for joining UVI's 2003 Crucian Festival Troupe has been extended to Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002. The festival committee is inviting everyone in the UVI community, as well as the general public, to participate in the troupe. The Crucian Festival Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003. Early-bird sign-up fees are $50 for UVI students, and $80 for staff, faculty and the general public. Participants will receive a costume and refreshments during the parade. "Folk Nativity" Set for Dec. 14-15 at Reichhold Center
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will present the musical "Folk Nativity" at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, and Sunday, Dec. 15. "Folk Nativity" was written by Caribbean dramatists Alwin Bully and Einstar LeBlanc. It is the story of an eccentric hermit on trial for stealing bananas. The action is set in a rural village, with contemporary characters in traditional Biblical roles. Reichhold Center Director David Edgecombe will serve as the production's director. Josephine Thomas-Lewis is the musical director.
