Aug. 27, 2003 – In a release from the V.I. Housing Authority on Wednesday, Donna Ayala, the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department's designated receiver of the agency, said that gas leak repairs to Building C in the Bovoni housing community will entail "replacing an extensive length" of line.
She said VIHA expects the work to be completed and cooking gas service to residents to be restored "within the next two days" — that is, by Friday.
On Tuesday, Ayala announced that gas service to Building C had been cut off "due to leaks in the main gas line."
St. Thomas Gas "found it necessary to turn off the gas" to the building, Ayala stated then, adding that work "to have the line repaired as soon as possible" was expected to entail "removing and replacing a portion of the gas line."
Ayala told residents that "until such time as repairs are completed, we ask that you make alternative, but safe, arrangements for preparation of meals." She added: "The Housing Authority realizes the inconvenience caused by this situation. However, the safety of our residents remains our primary concern."
