March 4, 2005 – First and foremost I would like to congratulate the parents, teachers and staff who participated in numerous activities that inspired reading, discussion, and yes, an appreciation for the foods and culture of Africans in the Diaspora during this month of celebration of their contributions throughout the world.
I also thank the following businesses that donated the great prizes for our quizzes:
VIP Signs and Engraving for the "Student Recognition" pins; Caribbean Safe Water Laboratory for the donation of $100 in books from Dockside Bookstore and the CD players ; Electronics Unlimited for a BIG discount of the players; and Dockside Bookstore for $100 dollars in Gift certificates. With their support our students ,and their parents ,who diligently worked on the 40 question quiz on the contributions of people of African descent in the Americas and throughout the Caribbean were rewarded for their time and effort.
I must thank our small but forceful Black History Month Committee members: Myself as Chair, Karen Hughes, Wanda Mills, Gail Caesar, Lynn Jones, and Michelle Schulterbrandt, for their help and suggestions for the questions for the quiz. An extra special thanks to Gail Caesar for assisting in scoring the quiz entries.
Thanks to Sherri Davis, President of the PTA who knows the importance of this month.
For their effort, all participants of the contest obtained awards including a CD player, a certificate of participation and an "student recognition" pin. Three students obtained perfect scores (40/40) they received in addition to the above, a $20 gift certificate to Dockside Bookstore which we know will be put to great use. The three students were:
Ariel Stolz – Mrs. Miller's 9-12
Noah Stolz – Ms. Keating's 6-9
Ca'Jani Fahie – Ms. Caballero's 6-9
Wanda Mills obtained 16 correct nswers out of 21 to become our winner for the Black History Month Photo quiz. She obtained a CD Player. Congratulations Wanda!I must note, Mr. James Nicholas, Jr., our school's caretaker also submitted an entry for the quiz and obtained a 39/40 score. He also received a CD player and a $20 gift certificate for his efforts. Congratulations Mr. Nicholas !
Congratulations to all who participated. Your determination to take on a challenge to do research and learn about a history that should be deemed qualified for our textbooks rather than as a point in time during one month is to be commended. Continue to grow and pass on the information you gained this month and share it throughout the year.
Answers for the quiz were sent with each child's entry to their teachers. Both quiz answers were posted in the front office and published in this issue of the newsletter.
