June 1, 2005 – On Friday, June 3, from 5 p.m. – until, Crucian Gold Jewelry Store on the Christiansted waterfront is hosting a Soiree, exhibiting its conch cearl collection. There will be hors d'oeuvres and beverages as well as live music to enjoy.
The exhibit showcases designer, Brian Bishop's 30- year collection of Conch Pearls.
Bishop, a self taught metal-smith, jeweler and artisan has been buying these rare gems of the Caribbean from the local fishermen of St. Croix. Approximately one in every ten thousand conchs produce a pearl and one in every ten to twenty are gem quality.
Crucian Gold's collection is likely one of the largest held by a single designer. The pearls range in shape, size and color, much like the shells that they are found in. Some conch pearls have a flame like, flickering pattern known as "chatoyancy," a highly valued quality.
"Conch pearls are still among the rarest of recognized gem stones." According to "Pearls -A Natural History," Published in 2001 by Henry N. Abrams, Inc. in association with the American Museum of Natural History and the Field Museum. Crucian Gold invites the public to view these unique and beautiful gems and will continue to display the Conch Pearl pieces in their established collection of jewelry.
