WAPA Names Third McFarlane Scholar

July 12, 2005 – Jodi Hodge of St. Thomas has been selected as the third recipient of the V.I. Water and Power Authority Twelfth Annual Alva McFarlane Engineering Scholarship. She is receiving the $60,000 scholarship because WAPA did not receive any qualified candidates for its $20,000 technology scholarships offered in each district.
Alberto Bruno-Vega, WAPA executive director, said the Authority usually offers one $60,000 engineering scholarship and one $20,000 technology scholarship in each district to seniors graduating from local schools. This year there were no successful applicants for the technology scholarships so at its June 30 meeting, the Authority's governing board approved an additional $20,000 and created a third engineering scholarship.
The previously announced winners were Glenfield A. Jarvis Jr. of St. Thomas and Malik A. Felix of St. Croix.
The scholarship which is named after Alva C. McFarlane, a former WAPA board member, covers tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies and air transportation. Summer employment at a WAPA facility is available if desired. Scholarship recipients must work for the Authority for one year for each year of education financed.
Hodge, a 16-year old graduate of Seventh Day Adventist School, will enroll in the University of the Virgin Islands to obtain a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering as part of UVI's 3-2 degree program. Students in the 3-2 program will attend UVI for the first three years of the five-year, two-degree program; the following two years will be spent at partner universities of Columbia University in New York or Washington University in St. Louis. This is the first year that WAPA has required students to participate in the 3-2 program at UVI.
Hodge is the daughter of Ronnie Hodge.
