Locally Available Scholarships 2006-2007

Following are summaries of information provided to the Source by sponsoring organizations about scholarships currently available.

St. Croix Foundation's Education Committee
Donor organization: DOVE Memorial Art Scholarship
Number of scholarships: Not announced.
Amount of scholarships: Up to $750.
Qualifications: Scholarships are offered for performing and visual arts and creative writing to junior high and high school students on St. Croix for the purpose of attending summer art enrichment programs
Deadline: March 30, 2006.
How/where to obtain an application:
All applicants can e-mail the Foundation at staff@stxfoundation.org to request an application or may pick one up at the Foundation office. St. Croix Foundation's Education Committee
Donor organization: Cambridge Math and Science Scholarship Fund.
Number of scholarships: Not announced.
Amount of scholarships: Up to $2,000
Qualifications: Scholarships are given to qualifying high school students on the island of St. Croix. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of a B or better. Students must be accepted into an accredited enrichment program locally or stateside, with a specific focus on math or science.
Deadline: March 30, 2006.

HOVENSA Scholarship Program
Donor organization: HOVENSA L.L.C. Scholarship Program
Number of Scholarships: Not announced.
Amount of scholarship: The amount of a scholarship award can be as much as $2,000 per year for a student who will attend the University of the Virgin Islands or $4,000 per year for a student who will attend an accredited U. S. college or university outside of the Virgin Islands. Once awarded, a scholarship continues for four years provided that the recipient continues enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited college or university and maintains good academic standing at the institution.
Qualifications:
The HOVENSA Scholarship Program is open to all persons enrolled in a high school in the U. S. Virgin Islands, have maintained a grade average of "B" (3.0) or higher, have resided in the Virgin Islands for at least fifteen (15) years prior to the date of their application, or whose parents have resided here for at least fifteen years immediately prior to that date, and have financial need.
Deadline: March 15, 2006.
How/where to obtain an application:
Applications for a HOVENSA scholarship are available from the office of the guidance counselor at all high schools in the U. S. Virgin Islands.
American Federation of Teachers Scholarships
Donor Organization: St. Croix Federation of Teachers, Local 1826
Number of scholarships: five.
Amount of scholarships: $1100.
Qualifications: High school seniors of AFT members are eligible.
Deadline: May 5, 2006.
How/where to obtain an application: All applicants should contact the guidance counselor at school or the AFT Union office at 778-4414.
Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority
Donor Organization: Alva C. McFarlane Engineering Scholarship
Number of scholarships: four scholarships, one at each level, in both the St. Croix and the St. Thomas/St. John/Water Island districts.
Amount of scholarship: Up to $60,000 for students to earn a bachelor's degree in engineering and up to $20,00 for students to earn an associate's degree in electronics engineering or electronics technology.
Qualifications:
McFarlane Scholars will be selected based on high school academic performance, community service record, personal interview and financial need. Scholars must return to full time paid employment at the Authority for a period of time equal to the period of the scholarship award received. WAPA has a critical need for electrical engineers so preference will be given to applicants seeking a degree in that field of study. Students studying for a bachelor's degree must enroll in the five year (3-2) engineering program at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). This program, conducted in partnership with Columbia University in New York City and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri Students, requires that students attend UVI for their first three years of study and complete the degree at one of the pre-selected universities during the last two years.
Applicants for the associate's degree scholarship must be accepted by a college or university accredited by a recognized educational accrediting organization in the United States. They are expected to return to WAPA after graduation to fulfill their obligation to the company.

Board of Education of the Virgin Islands
Donor organization: The Morris F. deCastro Fellowship Board
Number of scholarships: not announced.
Amount of scholarships: not announced.
Qualifications:
1) Be a bona-fide resident of the Virgin Islands.
2) Be an employee or official in active service of the V.I. government.
3) Applicant must have made an outstanding contribution during the preceding year.
4) Be accepted to an accredited institution of higher learning.
5) Be nominated by either the governor, the president of the Legislature, the presiding judge of the district or territorial courts, or the administrator of St. John or any executive department.
Deadline: June 30, 2006
