Brief: Deadline Looms for Fraternity's College-Scholarship Offer

May 30, 2007 — Young men in the Virgin Islands have until July 1 to apply for two scholarships offered by the local branch of a national fraternity.
The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will give two lucky young men $1,500 scholarships, said Semaj I. Johnson Sr., director of education activities for the fraternity.
"We want to create opportunities for young people, especially young males planning on attending historically black universities," Johnson said. "We want to assist so money isn't as much a factor."
The scholarships will be given to African-American V.I. students planning to attend a historically black university on the mainland, he said. An application is available for download here.
"If you are driven, if you're dedicated, we want to help remove money as an obstacle," Johnson said.
The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, founded in 1906, is the first African-American group of its kind. Former members include Martin Luther King Jr., former U.S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Olympian Jesse Owens, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and former Jamaica Prime Minister Norman Manley.
