Music Promoter Charged with Writing Bad Checks, Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses

July 13, 2007 — The owner of Iyah-Ites Promotion has been arrested and charged with six counts of drawing and delivering worthless checks, as well as six counts of obtaining money under false pretenses.
Leandra Maxine Richards, 29, of Estate Peter's Rest, was arrested at approximately 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to a police news release. She is accused of writing six checks to two businesses totaling $4,740 that were returned for insufficient funds. Judge Darrel D. Donohue set bail for Richards at $25,000. The charges are connected with an entertainment event organized by Richard's company and held on St. Croix last year.
Last month, Iyah-Ites Promotion produced the Beat the Streets youth music festival held at the Agricultural Fairgrounds. The concert promised a live performance by the popular Disney Channel pop group the Cheetah Girls. The group did not perform, however, and its members only appeared on stage for a few minutes, according to published reports.
Commissioner James H. McCall advises businesses to always ask for identification when accepting checks and credit cards for customers and to promptly notify law enforcement when a check is returned for insufficient funds, the news release said.
