July 13, 2007 — Police on St. Croix are investigating a shooting early Friday morning that left one man dead and another with injuries from multiple gunshot wounds.
The shooting occurred about 12:38 a.m. at the Walter I.M. housing community, according to a news release from police spokeswoman Monyka Johnigan. The 17-year-old victim, who sustained gunshot wounds to the back and head, was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m. after being transported to Luis Hospital.
The second victim, identified as a 21-year-old male, sustained injuries from multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen. He underwent surgery at Luis Hospital and was listed in stable condition, Johnigan said.
"The victim of the non-fatal portion of the shooting is the son of a Virgin Islands police officer who is currently serving in Iraq," Johnigan said in the statement. She could not be reached for further details following the release of the statement from the VIPD.
This is the sixth killing on St. Croix this year and the 19th territory wide. The last killing occurred June 18 on St. John, when 21-year-old James P. Cockayne died of multiple stab wounds about 1:10 a.m. after he was rushed to the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center. Police said Cockayne was found with only faint signs of life in Enighed at 12:28 a.m. that day.
Police urge residents with information on Friday's killing and any other unsolved crimes to contact the St. Croix Investigations Bureau by calling 911 or 778-4950.
