Brief: Power Restored to Parts of St. Thomas

July 17, 2007 — Power was restored to parts of St. Thomas shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday following an explosion at the Randolph Harley power plant earlier in the afternoon.
"Underground feeder 8 that goes from the Harley plant to the hospital has been energized, supplying power from the Sub Base, through Frenchtown, parts of downtown Charlotte Amalie and Hassel Island,” said Cassandra Dunn, spokesperson for the V.I. Water and Power Authority (WAPA).
WAPA will work through the night to get power working on the rest of the island, Dunn said. "Unit 12 is up in the power plant," she said. "We are asking the larger customers to use their own generators."
The students injured in the incident are at the Schneider Regional Medical Center, and their parents are with them, Dunn said. (See "Explosion at Power Plant Injures Interns, Causes Widespread Damage.")
