July 30, 2007 — Ongoing construction at the Red Hook Marine Terminal will again cause its parking lot to close, this time for approximately two weeks beginning Tuesday, the V.I. Port Authority has announced.
At the end of the current work, however, the lot will open permanently, VIPA spokesman Mark Stridiron said Monday.
"The lot will be closed at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday," he said. "Typically the scope of this work would take two weeks, but we want to make sure it is complete. This is the final work. Island Roads Corporation will be paving, curing and striping the lot."
In the meantime, drivers are advised that they may park at the authority's free temporary parking lot west of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, across from the entrance to the National Park Service facility.
The entrance road to the facility can be used to pick up and drop off passengers only. Vehicles found in violation of these restrictions will be towed at the owner's expense, officials said.
Most recently Island Roads closed the parking lot June 27, only to have it reopened a day later after Port Authority Board Chairman Robert O'Connor Jr. and Sen. Carmen Wesselhoft demanded the lot be reopened for the St. John July 4th celebration. (See "Closing Postponed: Red Hook Parking Lot to Stay Open Until After July 4.")
Stridiron was not able to provide a parking-fee rate schedule for the new lot.
