Baseball Tourney Opens with North Carolina Win Over Miami

Aug. 15, 2007 — The third annual Clendinen Caribbean Classic opened at the Lionel Roberts Stadium on Tuesday with a late afternoon game as the North Carolina Palominos from Greensboro downed the Miami Cardinals 4-3.
The four-day baseball tournament, sponsored by the V.I. Future Stars baseball organization and the Department of Housing, Parks and Recreation, will run through Friday, with games also featuring the V.I. Select baseball team and a team from West Tampa, Fla.
On Tuesday, North Carolina starting pitcher Jody Callaway helped himself with a RBI single that gave his team the early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, North Carolina right fielder Ben Brandon singled, and John Neese moved him to second on a slow roller to third. Neese moved to third when the next batter grounded out to the pitcher.
A wild pitch to first baseman Nick Rogers allowed the runner to score, making it 2-0 North Carolina.
At the top of the fourth inning, Miami had a chance to cut the lead to 2-1 when Fernando Aponte came to the plate with a runner on third and two out, but Aponte struck out.
