Antilles School Offers After-School Classes for K-12

Jan. 11, 2008 – The Antilles School is about to open registration for classes in art, cake decorating, fitness training, cheerleading dance, science, sewing, cooking and more. Classes will on Jan. 22. Registration will be held from 3-6 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 17; from 3-6 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 18; and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 19, in the lobby of the school's Mark C. Marin Center. The following workshops are offered for K-6.
Arts Workshop I for Kindergarten and 1st Grade – from 2:45 –3:30 p.m., on Tuesdays
Stories, art history, and art from other cultures will be used to introduce different artistic materials and techniques. The class will give children the opportunity to explore clay, paint, pastels and more.
Arts Workshop I for 2nd through 5th Grades – from 3:30–4:30 p.m., on Tuesdays
Projects will explore a variety of artistic styles and mediums: paints, collage, oil-pastels, etc. Students will have the opportunity to work independently as well as collaboratively. They will also look at the work of professional artists as they develop their own artist portfolios.
Cooking for 2nd through 6th Grades – from 3:15–4:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays.
Students will concoct a variety of treats–some healthy, some sweet. Each class will involve talking about the recipes and ingredients, cooking, and working on compiling their own cookbooks.
Science Explorations for Kindergarten and 1st Grades – from 3-3:45 p.m., on Thursdays
In this class, children will have the opportunity to ask and answer many questions about ecology, astronomy, chemistry, physics, anatomy and other sciences. We will work both independently and in groups as we study the world around us.
About the Instructor: Teaching artist Emily Funkhouser has studied visual art for over ten years and holds a Masters of Arts in Education from Harvard. She came to St. Thomas from New York City, where she taught as an art specialist and after-school teacher for several years. Classes for Middle and Upper School students include: Cake Decorating for Beginners (Middle School-High School); Cheer Leading Dance Class (Middle School); Fitness Fun (Middle School girls); Fitness Training (Middle School); Sew Stylish (Middle School and High School); and Voice Lessons (High School Students and Adults).
