Brief: St. John Woman Sends Books to Nevis

Jan. 11, 2007 — Although Nevis got financial help to build community centers across the island, it doesn't have the funds to buy books, games and other materials for its residents to use — so St. John resident Angie Smith-Liburd is stepping in to help fill those empty shelves.
"I just feel like Nevis needs help," she said.
While the Virgin Islands has lots of resources when it comes to buying books and games, that isn't the case in Nevis, Smith-Liburd said. The books and games don't have to be new. Nevis needs books for both youths and adults because it runs programs for people in all age groups. The government also delivers book when dropping off lunches to seniors through a senior lunch program, she said.
The Nevis government is paying for shipping, although anyone who wants to ship directly is welcome to do so, Smith-Liburd said. She learned about the problem recently while visiting Nevis to explore the roots of her husband, Levi Liburd.
She suggests that anyone with books to donate call her at 690-4280 to arrange a drop-off point, or ship them direct to the Ministry of Social Development in care of Alsted Pemberton, Charlestown, Nevis, West Indies.
Efforts to get more information from Nevis authorities were unsuccessful.
