Agencies Host Concert Series for V.I. History Month

Feb. 29, 2008 – March is Virgin Islands History Month, and in honor of this month, the V.I. Cultural Heritage Institute, Department of Education Cultural Education Division and the V.I. Council on the Arts will host a series of performances that will include a concert series. The concerts will feature students from public schools throughout the territory. School bands and ensembles, choirs, steel orchestras and cultural dancers will perform during March at community bandstands and outdoor stages, according to a press release from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources.
"During this year's observance and in keeping with the governor's commitment to involve Virgin Islands youth in all aspects of our culture and history, the focus continues on passing the torch to the future generation" said Myron Jackson, executive director of the V.I. Cultural Heritage Institute.
The events reflect upon the importance of remembering and paying tribute to the significant contributions of ancestors who have made significant contributions to the V.I. community in the field of music, dance and art. A special tribute will be made to musical icons such as Alton A. Adams Sr., Lionel V. Robert Sr., Arthur Jeppesen, Ohaldo Williams, Bill Lamotta, Jon Lucien, Eddie Russell, Emile "Milo" Francis, Nicholas "Nick-Daddy" Friday, Archie Thomas, Joe Parris, Leona Brady-Watson, James "Jamesie" Brewster, and Stanley Jacobs of the Ten Sleepless Knights.
The following is a list of scheduled activities for the Concert Series:
1) Dober Elementary School, at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 11, at Emancipation Garden, St. Thomas
2) Love City Pan Dragon Steel Orchestra at 11 a.m., Monday, March 17, at Franklin Powell Bandstand, St. John
3) Bertha Boschulte Middle School at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 18, at Emancipation Garden, St. Thomas
4) Arthur Richards and Evelyn Williams, at 9 a.m., Wednesday, March 19, at Frederiksted Bandstand, St. Croix
5) To be announced
6) Pearl B. Larsen Elementary School, at noon, Wednesday, March 19, at the Christiansted Bandstand, St. Croix
7) Lew Muckle School, at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, at Sunny Isle, St. Croix
8) Gladys Abraham Elementary School, at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, March 25, at Emancipation Garden, St. Thomas
9) Elena Christian Jr. High School, at 9 a.m., Wednesday, March 26, at Christiansted Bandstand, St. Croix
10) Claude O. Markoe School, at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 26, at Frederiksted Bandstand, St. Croix
11) Juanita Gardine School, at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 26, at Christiansted Bandstand, St. Croix
