March 28, 2008 – As Appropriation Bill No. 27-0171 made its way to Government House today for signature, Senator Louis Patrick Hill urged Governor de Jongh to sign it without delay to ensure the completion of the long-awaited Cardiac Center on St. Croix and to construct a first-class Youth Center on St. Thomas.
"We are so close to seeing the Virgin Islands Cardiac Center become a reality; but, without the Governor's signature, the necessary financing needed to begin operations in early summer will not be made available," stated Senator Hill. "The $6.5 million dollars appropriated in the bill will guarantee Virgin Islanders complete cardiovascular care, from diagnostics to intervention, without having to leave their homes and families behind." He went on to say that at this stage of near-completion, all obstacles must be removed and every elected leader must get behind the Juan Luis Board and make this critical facility become a reality.
Senator Hill said that on the island of St. Thomas, a critical need exists for a modern day, after-school facility for our youth–a place which is not only safe and fun but one which encourages community and family involvement with students. "Our children can achieve their ultimate potential only if we provide them with positive activities that develop self esteem. For too long we have talked about providing for our youth without action; this bill makes the St. Thomas Youth Center more than a dream," Senator Hill recounted.
Senator Louis Hill warned that to delay either of these projects would be a step backwards in the forward movement the territory is taking and encouraged the Governor to act swiftly on the recently passed legislation.
