Humane Society Celebrates Adopt-A-Cat Month

June 13, 2008 – The Humane Society of St Thomas is celebrating the nationwide Adopt-A-Cat Month by offering approved adopters the option of adopting two felines for the price of one. The adoption fee for cats and kittens is normally $50 each, but for the price of one, adopters may chose to adopt two cats during the month of June.
Shelters are typically overrun with cats and kittens in June due to the warmer weather in April and May, which causes unaltered animals to breed freely; consequently, many are relinquished to shelters. To assist in the problem of overpopulation the Humane Society spays and neuters all of its adopted animals and offers a low-cost spay/neuter voucher for those animals in private homes. If you need assistance, please call the shelter at 775-0599, or visit it between 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., everyday.
Cats make excellent companion animals as they provide unconditional love. It can be beneficial to adopt more than one cat or kitten, especially if the pet will be left alone for long periods while you are gone. Not all cats enjoy companionship, but many are very social with members of their own species. Young kittens need to engage in vigorous play for several hours a day and another kitten helps that happen.
An elegant, one-year-old shorthaired cat named Kelly is one of the dozens of felines looking for a family of their own. The shelter receives a variety of breeds, numerous colors and all ages of dogs and cats. All adopted cats have been tested for FIV and FeLV, have received their first distemper shot, have been treated for fleas and ticks, and arrive home already spayed or neutered.
The Humane Society is a non-profit animal shelter dedicated to eliminating cruelty, abuse and the overpopulation of animals. The shelter receives minimal local funds but heavily relies on the generosity of its donors to continue its mission. The new Animal Care Campus is due to open this fall across from Market Square East.
