Grow and Learn About Coconuts and Other Tropical Fruits

Sept. 5, 2008 – The St. George Village Botanical Garden is offering an educational workshop on coconuts and other tropical fruits. It will be held from 3-5 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Pavilion at the Bodine Visitors' Center. SGVBG has educational "Grow and Learn Workshops" on the second Wednesday of each month. The cost is $5 for members and $15 for non-members. Pre-registration is preferred but not required.
Marilyn Cook, a master gardener, will talk coconuts. Many people know about coconut water and coconut meat, but how about all the other things that the coconut palm provides? She will also discuss some of the different uses of local fruits that are in season at this time, such as genip.
As part of St. Croix Environmental Association's environmental-education outreach, it alerts the public about this workshop, which focuses on the many uses of the coconut palm and other tropical fruits. It is a reminder about the benefits of eating locally to conserve energy, reduce global warming, encourage local agriculture and enhance the sustainability of the island community.
