Government Exists to Serve the People

Dear Source:

I applaud the efforts of UVI to institute customer service as an overall policy. Simple measures like knowing one's job and being courteous should naturally be part of any agencies policy, especially within the government. Far too often, we find that this is not the case. It's all a matter of training and ensuring that the right person is hired for the job.
Anyone who has visited a Virgin Island government office has been faced with poor customer service and in many instances, unknowledgeable personnel. This must change if the government is ever to become truly customer-friendly and efficient. Simple things like returning a phone call or being at one's desk during working hours would go a long way to show the public that the government exists to serve them.
The Virgin Islands government spending is among the highest in per-capita costs in the country yet citizens receive some of the poorest service. The time is now to change how we do business and the UVI initiative is just what the doctor ordered.
