Alert: Some Food Unsafe After Power Outage

Nov. 26, 2008 — People should be careful about eating perishable food that may have been contaminated as a result of the power outages Tuesday and Wednesday in the St. Thomas-St. John district, the Department of Health warns.
Individuals and restaurateurs should be mindful of serving or eating food that may have food-borne illnesses or other bacteria from being improperly refrigerated during the outage, said Health Department Commissioner Vivian I. Ebbesen Fludd, according to a news release.
Perishable foods, including meat, poultry, fish, eggs and leftovers that have been above 40 degrees fahrenheit for two hours or more, should be discarded. Food with an unusual odor, color or texture should also be thrown away.
