An accused sex offender previously arrested on aggravated rape charges in 2007 was arrested again on St. Croix Friday and charged with inappropriately touching a 10-year-old girl.
Bail was set at $10,000 for 57-year-old Tydel John, who was arrested by police around 11:20 a.m. Friday and remanded to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending an advice of rights hearing scheduled for Monday.
John — a former school teacher — was previously released on a $1.5 million unsecured bond and placed on house arrest for a similar set of charges filed two years ago, which included three counts of aggravated rape, eights counts of unlawful sexual contact, seven counts of child abuse and two counts of child neglect for alleged encounters with nine girls — one that court documents said he attempted to touch — between the ages of eight and 13.
He was arrested again in April 2008 on additional charges filed by the government and has so far pleaded not guilty to 20 counts of sexual assault.
In February 2009, a St. Croix judge modified John’s bail conditions and allowed him to work as a driving school instructor during the day. The case is still pending.
John’s arrest on Friday stems from an alleged incident in early August, according to a Police Department news release. He has been charged with unlawful sexual contact in the first degree and child abuse, the release said.
