Reader Fresh Collins asked the V.I. Answer Desk to find out: "What can be done to ensure that gas stations have operable air pumps for motorist at all times? Collins, a St. Thomian, noted that the majority of stations on his island have inoperable pumps.
Fresh,
according to Shayla Solomon at the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs, gas stations in the territory are required to have working air pumps; not only is it a requirement, but stations can be fined if their air pump is not working.
Stations are inspected weekly and this includes the air pumps. However, Solomon said, it’s very important for the public to contact DLCA as soon as they find an inoperable pump.
“They can call right there from the gas station,” Solomon said. “We need to know as it is happening.”
Consumers who observe an inoperable pump should call the DLCA Office of Weights and Measures at 774-3130 on St. Thomas, 777-2226 on St. Croix and 693-8036 on St. John.
