Generation Problems Cause Rolling Blackouts on St. Thomas

The loss of two units at the Randolph Harley Power Plant has forced rotating power outages on St. Thomas, but V.I. Water and Power Authority Executive Director Hugo Hodge Jr. said Wednesday night that the utility’s crews are working around the clock to get the lights back on.
Unit No. 22 was "causing some trouble" Tuesday and went down again Wednesday morning, which caused the first set of outages, Hodge said during a brief phone interview.
The unit subsequently came back online, but was followed by the loss of Unit No. 13, he added.
"We’ve also been doing maintenance on Unit No. 15, and we’ve been working on getting that back online," Hodge explained. "We’ve also been working on Unit No. 13, and if we can get both back online, we should be fine."
As of around 9 p.m. Wednesday, Hodge said only a small section of the island is out, but that crews will be "working all night" to solve the generation problems.
