Ninth Annual Relay for Life to Begin Saturday

A life-changing event for cancer patients, survivors and their family and friends, the ninth annual American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is set for this weekend at the Charlotte Amalie High School track.
Beginning Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., Relay For Life gives everyone in the community a chance to celebrate the lives of people who are engaged in a battle against cancer, to remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.
Funds raised by participating teams provide assistance for all registered ACS Cancer patients to receive help in numerous ways including transportation off island, accommodations, medications, treatment, prosthetics and much more. According to a release from the American Cancer Society, all money raised in the territory stays here.
Members of the community are encouraged and invited to attend the event; for a $10 donation, members of the public can cheer on family and friends from the grandstand.
In keeping with this year’s theme, "Let’s Celebrate More Birthdays," the committee anticipates a colorful show of balloons, ribbons, streamers and the like throughout the “Birthday Village” this year.
Relay 2010 kicks off with an opening ceremony at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by the Survivor lap, led by the St Thomas Majorettes at 4:30 p.m. Following this first lap, all teams are invited to join them, and Relay for Life 2010 will be officially up and running.
According to the release, there will be plenty of fun and games for the children; while for the adults, Top News Band takes the stage until the Luminary Ceremony takes place at 7:30 p.m.
The Survivor dinner takes place from 6:15 p.m. thru 7:15 p.m. in the Survivor Tent. All survivors and caregivers are encouraged to attend.
The moving and inspiring Luminary Ceremony, where lights across the end field are dimmed and luminaries twinkle in the dark around the track, takes place at 7:30 p.m.
Teams continue to walk/run the track from 8 p.m. thru the night and into Sunday morning; and to keep everyone awake, engaged and on the track, activities and contests are scheduled.
The final closing ceremony takes place Sunday at 10 a.m.
