District After School Programs Begin in October

The St. Thomas-St. John District’s After School Enrichment Program, operated by Learn-It Systems Inc., will officially begin on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Superintendent for the St. Thomas-St. John District Jeanette Smith-Barry said, “We at the district are committed to helping your child to be successful in school, and we need you to work along with us. The after school program is being offered to help improve your child’s overall academic achievement, particularly in the areas of reading and math. If your child has been identified for needing improvement in reading and math, I encourage you to take full advantage of this opportunity and return the completed application to your child’s school no later than Tuesday, Oct. 12.
This means that you must ensure your child’s attendance and participation daily. Your child must be able to attend the after school program from the beginning to the end. There will be a pre-test at the beginning and a post test at the end, so you will be able to see just how much progress your child makes.”
There will be a pre-test at the beginning of the program and a post-test at the end, so parents will be able to see just how much progress their child makes. The program is open to all public school elementary and junior high students (K-8) [with the exception of Joseph Sibilly and Guy Benjamin Schools].The after school program’s operating hours will begin 15 minutes after school is dismissed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays each week and will include an afternoon snack. Parents are asked to make every effort to pick up their children by 4:45 p.m. The program will conclude on March 8, 2011.
“Your child is expected to follow the rules of the program, and show good discipline and respect for everyone, each day,” the superintendent said. “Have them share with you some of what they learn daily.Working together, we can and will help your child demonstrate growth and proficiency in school.”
