On a day when the sea was choppy, murky and uninviting, 20 local athletes dove into the water to compete in the Caribbean Classic triathlon Sunday morning at Cramer Park, with Wayne Nichols holding on for first place overall, according to a news release from Theresa Harper.
Nichols emerged from the 1,500-meter swimming leg trailing John Salo by slightly more than a minute, 25 minutes, 12 seconds to 26:16. Salo held his lead through the bicycle leg of the race, completing the 25-mile bike ride in 1 hour, 15 minutes, 46 seconds to Nichols 1:16:36.
But Nichols took over when they came to the 5.8 mile running, blazing through the course in 41 minutes, 58 seconds to Salo’s 48:08, giving Nichols the win with a cumulative time of 2:24:50 to Salo’s 2:29:11.
Troy Holloway was close behind with a time of 2:29:45, for third place, and Scott Fricks finished fourth in a time of 2:34:25.
