Government Announces New Inter-neighborhood Sports Competition

The Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation is putting together an inter-neighborhood sports competition, according to Commissioner Pedro Cruz.

In a statement from the department, Cruz said he believed more children and youth would be reached by going in to the respective communities. “All children and youth would have the opportunity to participate and enjoy the benefits of the programs," he said.

Cruz said the competitions will start Jan. 23 at the Emile Griffith ballpark, then start from west-end, by Budhoe Community, moving to the east end of St. Thomas, then ending at St. John.

On St. Croix, games will start in January, at dates to be announced, starting at the D.C. Canegata ballpark and moving west.

“We intend to cover at least 10 communities during the calendar year in the respective districts,”  Cruz said. “It is the moment to go that extra mile to assure that our children and young people participate and receive the good discipline which is delivered through our sports programs.”

Cruz said, “The Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation staff stands ready to serve the athletes” and encourages parents, community leaders and community organizations to participate by partnering with Sports, Parks and Recreation.

“Each community will know in advance their opportunity,” Cruz said, adding that he hopes children and youth will be motivated to participate.
