EPA Seeks Nominees for Annual Environmental Champion Awards

As it has done for many years, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is asking the public to nominate candidates for its Environmental Champion Awards. Nominations are due March 1.

Those nominated must be individuals, businesses and organizations that have contributed significantly to improving the environment and protecting public health in the Virgin Islands.

Those who win the awards will be honored at an event to be held May 13 at EPA Region 2 headquarters in New York.

"EPA’s prestigious Environmental Champion Award recognizes the hard work, vision and courage exhibited by local leaders who are committed to environmental protection,” EPA Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck said in a Wednesday press release. “Everyone is encouraged to nominate people who are stellar leaders in this arena.”

The awards recognize achievement in six categories. They are business and industry, individual citizen, nonprofit organization, environmental or community group, environmental education, federal, state, local or tribal government or agency, and members of the media.

Last year, Caribbean Solar Co. on St. John, Mario Francis of the V.I. Urban and Community Forestry Council on St. Thomas and the Nature Conservancy on St. Croix received awards.

Last year’s award winners are not eligible for a 2016 award. Award winners from 2014 and before are eligible, but must be renominated for consideration this year. Self-nominations are welcome.

Nominations must include a nomination form, a narrative description of the nominee’s accomplishments and supporting documentation such as testimonials and news clippings.
