FBI Does Not Deem Threat Credible

The FBI on St. Thomas reported Thursday that a threat to targets in the Virgin Islands was not deemed credible, but the agency is taking it seriously.

John Clarke, supervisor of the St. Thomas office, confirmed that a report of such a threat had been made.

"The FBI is aware of that telephonic communication," he said. "We’re doing a legal and logical investigation to determine if it’s credible."

Wednesday evening of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan Command Center issued an advisory of a "potential threat" to the territory.

"The Sector San Juan Command Center received a call from someone identifying themselves as ‘Andrew Miller’ stating that his friend is an ISIS fanatic and intends on carrying out an attack on the Beef Island Airport in BVI," the emailed advisory said, "The caller stated that his friend, and others, plan to blow up the airport on Friday … and also plan on targeting St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. No further information was gathered from the phone call. FBI and law enforcement agencies have been notified."

The Coast Guard did not know how credible the threat was but suggested the security teams at local offices "exercise vigilance."

Calls to the V.I Police and the V.I. Port Authority were not returned Thursday morning.
