Avery Joseph, Javelin Thrower, Headed for SPIRE Academy Training

Avery Joseph, javelin throwerAvery Joseph is a freshman at Central Michigan University (CMU), a graduate of Charlotte Amalie High School and a member of the Cheetah’s Track Club. Coached by Dale Joseph, who is his father and a V.I. National Junior Track and Field coach, Avery Joseph has had a strong freshman year at CMU as he has improved on his javelin throw to 59.09m, an improvement of four meters on his personal record, to take fifth place at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Joseph is a multi-athlete and he brings a future for multi-event athlete development to the Virgin Islands. A candidate for the V.I. National CARIFTA Junior Team, he got a late start for the year due to cold weather conditions in the north. Because the javelin is not an indoor event, he had little chance to improve for CARIFTA, which always takes place on Easter weekend.
Joseph has been awarded a training grant at the SPIRE Academy. A United States Olympic Training Center, SPIRE Academy is a high school and postgraduate academy for track and field athletes from across the United States and around the world. By placing emphasis on enhanced academic and athletic development, the academy is advertised as the ultimate environment for cultivating a more physically, socially and academically mature track and field athlete, who is fully prepared to meet maximum potential and the demands of being a college or university student-athlete.
While at the two-week training sessions at SPIRE, Joseph will be under the guidance of Nathan Taylor, an elite track and field coach as well as a Virgin Islands National Track and Field team coach, who holds the national record for the decathlon. He will receive the integrated program that provides the opportunity to maximize his abilities. He will have a full evaluation analysis and remediation plan and will then develop individualized training that covers every facet of training for track and field. With the ability to reevaluate during the year, SPIRE will adjust Joseph’s program to maintain optimal progress.
