Black History Month, which is celebrated in February, is a great opportunity to celebrate and recognize the achievements of African Americans and their contributions to the country and the world. Many persons, including members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., such as Dr. Mae Jemison, astronaut, Coretta Scott-King, civil rights activist, and Dr. Maya Angelou, poet, have contributed greatly to our country.
In commemoration of Black History Month, Sigma Theta Omega and Rho Omicron Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. of St. Thomas-St. John participated in Read-Ins at Julius E. Sprauve School and Jane E. Tuitt Elementary School. Chapters also hosted social “Paint” gatherings.
In keeping with the sorority’s Black History Month focus this year, local chapters are supporting the arts as they celebrate the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement, which were critical eras in the resurgence of black arts and culture that promoted social, cultural and historical consciousness and liberation that has helped to shape communities today.
“As we conclude Black History Month today and look forward to the celebration of V.I. History Month, let us continue to celebrate our black history, for black history is our history, and it is all year long,” said Lucille Parsons, president of Sigma Theta Omega Chapter.
