NAMI Offers Free Mental Health Peer Support Biweekly by Conference Call

NAMI STAR Center Delivering on the Hope for Recovery

The public is invited to join the National Alliance on Mental Illness’ (NAMI) free biweekly conference call at 3 p.m. on every second and fourth Tuesday. The new conference line number is 929-436-2866; the new conference pin# is 179783500# live. Join from the comfort of home.

Learn about mental health peer support. Peer support offers help and support based upon personal experience. The foundation of peer support is recovery, which is a journey based on the ideas of high expectations, hope, empowerment, self-determination, interdependence and critical thinking.

Recovery is not an absence of symptoms or cravings; it is the management of them in order to have an increasingly better quality of life. Recovery is knowing who you are and using your strengths to become all that you were meant to be. Self-help is part of recovery.

Peers share aspects of their stories that help individuals feel less alone and experience a sense of hope. The relationships are important in helping individuals reduce their feelings of stigma and shame, which are often associated with having a mental health diagnosis.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is committed to recovery, peer support, expansion of consumer opportunities and multicultural action to meet the needs of underserved communities.

Topics covered include:
-What peer support is
-How peer support benefits persons living with mental health diagnoses
-Benefits of peer-led services
-How to become a peer support worker
-How to tell your story
-How to engage the community to make a change

Everyone is invited to join the conversation, and persons or family members who have experience with mental health conditions are encouraged to join. Questions will be answered by the National Alliance for Mental Illness NAMI STAR Center http://www.peerstar.org
