Albert Hewitt Sr. Dies at 92

Albert Hewitt Sr.

Albert Hewitt Sr., age 92, of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, passed away on Sept. 12 in Aiken, S.C. He was the seventh of 13 children born to the late Sebert Hewitt Sr. and Almina Hewitt, on Feb. 21, 1927.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Jean Hewitt.
Albert Hewitt Sr. is survived by his sons: Martin Hewitt (Florence), Albert Hewitt Jr. (Nadine) and Kevin Hewitt Sr. (Marlene); daughters: Alicia Hewitt (his caregiver) and Vanessa Hewitt-Quinland Esq.; son-in-law, Joseph A. Quinland; grandchildren: Sean Fahie, Kevin Hewitt Jr., Patricia Quinland Esq., Anthony Hewitt, Chanel Fahie, Kevin Hewitt III and Devin Hewitt; and extended grandchildren: Latisha Wheeler, Ashley Woodward, Michelle Joseph (Terrence), Simone Rawlins, Sakiya Johnson, Latoya Newsome, Yoce Barksdale, Brandi Wilson and Aneke Miller.

He is also survived by a host of great-grandchildren; brother, Abraham Hewitt Sr. (Doreen); sisters: Griselda Hewitt Pender, Almira Hewitt Harris and Janice Hewitt Schrader; mother-in-law, Louise Young; sisters-in-law: Alicia Hewitt and Linda Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends too numerous to mention.

We would like to thank the Caribbean Dialysis Center, especially Olga, and his caregivers: Denise Joseph, Samantha Peterson, Ms. Peterson (of St. Croix) and Adell Nicholas.

Albert Hewitt Sr. grew up in Estate Rattan and spent 36 years in the United States Army and the Virgin Islands National Guard, active duty, before he retired as a command sergeant major. After retiring from the military, Albert continued to serve his community as an elementary school special education teacher and as a member of the Coastal Zone Management board. Albert, an ordained minister, was an active member of the Bethel A.M.E Church and the Beulah A.M.E. Zion Church. He enjoyed gardening, playing the guitar and organ and singing, and on occasion, he would recruit his children, their friends, nephews and nieces to play and sing along.

The family viewing will be from 5-7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, at James Memorial Funeral Home, 4040 Estate La Grande Princesse, Christiansted, St Croix 00820.

Come, dressed in your favorite shade of blue, to help us celebrate the life of Albert Hewitt Sr. The viewing will take place at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at Beulah A.M.E. Zion Church, Estate Lower Bethlehem, St. Croix, V.I. A private interment will follow.
