VIPD Confirms Two Homicides Over the Weekend

Two men were shot, and died of their injuries, in separate incidents in the U.S. Virgin Islands, police said. One fatal shooting took place on St. Thomas and the second on St. Croix.

Ferdinand Marshall, 46 years old, died Friday evening of wounds received during a shooting in the Contant area.

It was the second homicide in the territory and the first on St. Thomas since the beginning of the year.

According to the report from the VIPD, at about 7:22 p.m. Friday police were notified about a shooting in Contant. Officers arrived at the scene and observed an unresponsive male lying face up. Emergency Medical Technicians arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim dead.

The police said officers worked long into the night to locate the perpetrator but were unsuccessful.

The case is under investigation by the Major Crime Unit. Police urged anyone with information about the incident to call 911, the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-774-2211 ext. 5606 or the anonymous tip services, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.

Shortly after noon on Saturday the VIPD confirmed a second homicide, this one in Castle Coakley. It was the third in the territory since the beginning of the year, the second on St. Croix.

On Sunday afternoon the VIPD identified the victim as 22-year-old Gyasi Chiverton.

The VIPD statement confirmed that at approximately 12:11 p.m. Saturday, the 911 call center received a report of a gunshot victim in the vicinity of Thomas Bakery in Castle Coakley. The victim was transported via ambulance to the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau in investigating the incident. The police said more information would be forthcoming as it becomes available.
