The District Court of the Virgin Islands continues to monitor the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). In so doing, the Honorable Chief Judge Wilma A. Lewis issued the Eighth Order Concerning Operations of the District Court of the Virgin Islands Video and Teleconferences for Criminal Proceedings on Wednesday, July 8.
On March 27, Congress passed and the president signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) authorizing the use of video conferencing and teleconferencing under certain circumstances and with the consent of the defendant after consultation with counsel for various events in criminal cases during the course of the COVID-19 emergency.
The most recent order extends the Third Order Concerning Operations of the District Court of the Virgin Islands Video and Teleconferences for Criminal Proceedings, which was entered on April 9. It shall remain in effect for an additional 90 days from the July 8 order unless terminated earlier or extended.
