VITFF Bulletin: Virgin Islanders Compete in Indoor/Outdoor Track and Field Competition

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation gives results for high school and college indoor/outdoor track and field competitions.

Michelle Smith, a high school sophomore at Montverde Academy, had her first Indoor competition for the season at The VA Showdown 2022 in Virginia Beach, Va., on Jan. 14 and 15. She won her 55-meter hurdle prelim, which qualified her for the 60mH final. Smith’s time of 8.54 in the 55mH is a new Virgin Islands Junior Record. Michelle also ran a V.I. Junior record in the 500m with 1:14.10. Her time ranked her 1st in the state of Florida and qualified her for the 400m National High School Championship. Smith also competed in the 400m relay with her school team and split a 56.60 in her second leg 400m. Montverde finished in 1st with an overall time of 3:57.59.

On Jan. 22, Smith competed in the IMG Indoor-Outdoor Classic where she placed 1st in the 800m in 2:19.78 and 2nd in the 300m in 40.28. Her time in the 300m is a VI Junior record.

Mikaela Smith, a senior at Austin Peay State University, opened her 2022 indoor season at the Ed Temple Invitational, at TSU in Nashville, Tenn. She finished 1st in the 4*400m with a personal best of 59.85, and she helped her team with a 1st place win in the 4*400m relay with an overall time of 4:06.88.

On Jan. 14 and 15, Smith competed in the Commodore Challenge at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. She finished 1st in her heat of the 800m in 2:18.36, 17th overall in the 1000m with a time of 3:02.78 and the Austin Peay 4*400m team finished 4th in 3:54.35 with Smith on the 3rd leg.

On Jan. 21 and 22, Smith competed in the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville. She ran the 1200m in the distance medley relay (1200m, 400m, 800m, mile). Her team finished 6th in a time of 12.39.40. She finished 3rd in her heat in the 800m with an indoor personal best of 2:12.44. Austin Peay’s 4*400m finished 9th overall with a season best of 3:53.55 with Smith on the 2nd leg.

She will compete next in the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Ky.

Rachel Conhoff, a Ursinus College junior, opened her season with the 2022 Collegeville Classic home meet. She finished 1st in the mile with a personal best time of 5:15.26.

Her next track meet will be the Little Dip Invitational.

Osaze DeMund Williams, in his first Track and Field competition of the season, competed at the Dr. MLK Jr. Collegiate Invitational. Williams finished 6th overall in the 600m 1:22.68. He competes next week at the New Mexico Team Open.

Jeniqua Weekes, St. Croix Track Club Mustang, competed in the 1st and 2nd scrimmage developmental meets at the St. Croix Educational Complex on Jan. 15 and 22. She won the U17 150m 21.71 and finished 2nd in the U17 600m in 2:05.20. In the second meet, Weekes finished 2nd in the U17 400m in 1:12.84.

Kirra Lambert, Jolly Rogers TC, competed in the same meets and finished 1st in the U17 600m in 1:50.36, 1st in the U17 300m in 47.84 and 2nd in the U17 150m in 21.72. In the 2nd meet, Lambert finished 1st in U17 3000m in 12:06.88 and 1st in the U17 400 in 1:07.56.

Makari Matthew, Jolly Rogers TC, competed in the 1st and 2nd scrimmage developmental meets at the St. Croix Educational Complex on Jan. 15 and 22. Matthew finished 1st in the U20 600m in 1:38.81, 1st in the U20 150m in 18.36 and 1st in the U20 300m 41.90. In the 2nd meet, he finished 2nd in the U20 400m in 57.43.

Nathan Langley, Jolly Rogers TC, competed in the 1st and 2nd scrimmage developmental meets at the St. Croix Educational Complex on Jan. 15 and 22. Langley finished 1st in the U17 600m in 1:44.39, 1st in the U17 150m in 19.05 and 1st in the U17 300m in 44.41. In the 2nd meet, Langley finished 1st in the U17 400m in 58.22 and 1st in the 100mH in 18.71

Jordan Vaughn, St. Croix Track Club, competed in the 1st and 2nd scrimmage developmental meets at the St. Croix Educational Complex on Jan. 15 and 22. He finished 1st in the U20 shot put and discus with throws of 11.30m and 19.73m, respectively; in the U20 150m, he finished 2nd in 19.25. In the 2nd meet, Vaughn won the javelin throw with a 24.04m.

Arianna Edgar, St. Croix Track Club, competed in the 1st and 2nd scrimmage developmental meets at the St. Croix Educational Complex on Jan. 15 and 22. In the first meet, Edgar placed 1st in the U20 shot put with 11.67m and 1st in the U20 discus with a throw of 31.65m. In the 2nd meet, she placed 1st in the U20 javelin with a throw of 18.54m.

Mikey Dizon-Bumann, Jolly Rogers TC, competed in the 2nd scrimmage developmental meet at the St. Croix Educational Complex on Jan. 22. He finished 1st in the 3000m U20 division in a personal best time of 9:51.72 and a 1st place finish in the 400m in 53.72.

Keadon Gleason, Jolly Rogers TC, competed in the U17 division and won the 3000m in 10:24.25, which is less than ½ minute from the CARIFTA qualifying standard.

Sam Compton from St. Croix and currently a freshman at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., competed in the Coach I Open meet on Jan. 15, where he finished 4th in the 60m dash final with a time of 7.24 seconds. Compton also helped his school’s 4*200m relay team finish in 1st place with a 1:32.82.

Compton competed on Jan. 22 in the Alvernia Winter Invite, where he ran a 7.26-seconds in the 60m dash prelim and qualified for the finals. In the final, Compton ran a 7.21 for 6th place overall. He placed 8th overall in the 200m in a time 23.45, and he helped his school’s 4*400m relay to a 10th place finish in a time of 3:43.94.

Jerome “Jay” Swindell, a senior at Lawrenceville High School competed in the Lawrenceville Invite 2022 on Jan. 15, 2022. He finished 4th in the final of the 55m in 6.79. In the 200m, he finished 2nd overall in 24.22.

Swindell competed in the Mercer County Championships 2022 on Jan. 21 and 22, 2022 in the 55m and finished 13th with a time of 6.88. In the 200m, he finished 28th in a time of 25.12.

Sofia Swindell a freshman at the Lawrenceville School, competed in the Mercer County Championships 2022 on Jan. 21 and 22. She finished 6th overall in the 200m in 27.36, ran a 9.15-seconds in the 55m hurdles prelim and finished 3rd overall in the long jump final with a jump of 16 feet and 2 inches.
