The Virgin Islands Track & Field Federation has announced that Eduardo Garcia will represent the Virgin Islands at the World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The championships are held from July 15 to July 24. Garcia will be competing for the Virgin Islands in the marathon, which is 26.2 miles, at 6:15 a.m., Sunday, July 17.
He is the current top marathon runner in the Caribbean and has re-written the Virgin Islands national long-distance track, cross-country and road running records from the 5000 meters to the marathon.
Garcia has had high achievements as a student athlete at the NCAA Division I National Track and Field Championships for the University of Florida in the Southeastern Conference. One of his notable accomplishments includes being the first Virgin Islands cross-country runner to advance to the NCAA Division I National Championships. Garcia follows in the footsteps of Billy Bohlke, V.I. national team member, who was a star at LSU. Garcia is also the first VI runner to run under 2:20 for the marathon.
