VITFF: Michelle Smith No. 1 in World in 400m Hurdles

Michelle Smith, a high school senior at Montverde Academy, competed in the Louie Bing Invitational on Feb. 16 and 17, in Miami, Fla.

Michelle ran in the semi-finals of the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles on Friday finishing first in both events to advance to the final. The 57.11 Smith ran in the semi-final of the 400m hurdles was also a meet record. Michelle bettered the meet record time while winning the 400m hurdles finals race in a time of 56.82. Her time was 16 hundredths of a second of the V.I. National record, which is in her name. Smith’s 400m hurdles time also ranks her No. 1 in the World for U20, and her time is the fastest 400m hurdles time ever run in Florida by a high schooler, according to the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation.

Smith competed in the long jump and finished in 1st place with a jump of 5.64 meters. She also won a silver medal in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.10 seconds.

For all her accomplishments at the Louie Bing Track and Field Invitational, Michelle Smith received a trophy for Most Valuable Athlete.

Next, Michelle Smith will complete her last indoor meet for her high school career, which is the New Balance Indoor Nationals Championship in Boston, Mass. on Mar. 8-10.

Virgin Islands Track and Field team member Malique Smith competed in the USC Indoor Open meet on Feb. 17 in Columbia, S.C.

He finished 3rd in his heat of the 400m with a time of 49.01.

Smith will be representing the Virgin Islands in World Indoor Championships, which are going to be held from March 1 – 3, in Glasgow, Scotland.

Virgin Islands Track and Field team member Michael Dizon-Bumann, a sophomore at Cornell University and a graduate of Good Hope Country Day School, competed in the Cornell Marc the Ithaca Deneault Invitational on Feb. 17 in Ithaca, N.Y.

He finished 4th in the 800m with a personal best time of 1:57.63.
