VI Track and Field Federation: Garcia and Demund Set V.I. Records; Swindell Matches Own V.I. U20 Record

Congratulations to V.I. National Team member Eduardo Garcia who competed in the Gate River USA 15K Championships in Jacksonville, Fla. Garcia completed the 15-kilometer race in a new V.I. National record time of 45:15 and placed 10th overall. This is the 4th time he has competed in this road race championship, and it is also his highest finishing place.

Garcia is working on qualifying for the Marathon in the Olympic Games which will be held in Paris, France, this year. Garcia’s next race will be the NYC Half Marathon on March 17.

Congratulations to VI National Team member Osaze Demund, who competed in the Mountain West Conference Championships. Demund competed in the short track (indoor) 800m, running a new Virgin Islands National Indoor record of 1:50.87

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Sofia Swindell competed with The Lawrenceville School at the NJSIAA Indoor Championship meet on Feb. 21 in Tom’s River, NJ. Swindell placed first in the 55-m hurdles and tied her VI U20 National Record time of 8.23. She also placed first in the 55-m Dash, running a personal best time of 7.16. Swindell anchored the 4x400m relay team, which placed first with a time of 4:16.88. The Lawrenceville School placed first overall, winning the NJSIAA Prep A Championship.

On Feb. 24, Swindell competed with The Lawrenceville School in the Elite Division of the Ocean Breeze Elite Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y. In the 60m hurdles prelims, She ran a personal best time of 8.79 and advanced to finals. In the finals, Swindell placed fifth, running a new personal best of 8.72

Immediately after completing the hurdles, Sofia ran the 300m Dash, placing 9th with a time of 40.51. Sofia was also part of the 4x200m relay team, which finished in third place and set a school record, running a time of 1:43.20.
