Responding to the recent resignation of Attorney General Ariel Smith, Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. has appointed Ian Clement as the territory’s acting attorney general, effective immediately.
In a release Saturday, Bryan expressed confidence in Clement’s abilities, citing his extensive experience and understanding of the local legal system.
“Deputy Attorney General Clement is a respected attorney with a deep understanding of the U.S. Virgin Islands legal framework,” Bryan stated. “I am confident in his ability to provide steady leadership during this transition period.”
The appointment of Clement comes amidst concerns regarding the continuity and stability of the Department of Justice following Smith’s departure after less than a year on the job. While Clement assumes the role of Acting Attorney General, Bryan’s office has assured the public that plans for a permanent replacement are in progress with the announcement election of a long-term successor expected in the coming weeks.
Smith replaced Attorney General Denise George, whom Bryan fired in December 2022 on the heels of her record $105 million settlement with the estate of the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Bryan nominated Carol Thomas-Jacobs, the acting attorney general between George and Smith, to be a Superior Court judge.
