Fatal Shooting at DeChabert Basketball Court

On Friday, 911 received a Shot Spotter alert of seven rounds fired near the basketball court in Richmond. Shortly after, one caller reported a male was shot at 11:57 a.m., reported the V.I. Police Department.

Upon officers’ arrival, they discovered a male victim who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body. He was transported by ambulance and shortly after succumbed to his injuries, according to the police report.

This is the 38th homicide in the territory and the 17th on St. Croix, according to the Source Homicide List.* St. Thomas has reported 21 homicides and St. John, none.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim was driving past the basketball court in the DeChabert Housing Community in Richmond. When he was stopping, the suspect then opened the door of the vehicle and discharged shots at the victim, the report stated.

This is an active investigation, and the CIB is asking the public for any tips and leads that can assist in bringing the suspect to justice. Call the CIB at 340-778-2211, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or 911.

*The Source Homicide List is a chronological log of the homicides recorded in 2024 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as reported by the VIPD. Cases are broken down by island. While this listing is based on VIPD reports, the Source does not include suicides or vehicular homicides in its listing, which the police and some other media do. This can lead to a discrepancy in the number of incidents reported.
