Woman Turns Herself In After St. Croix Assault; Second Suspect Sought

A woman turned herself in Tuesday in connection with a June assault on St. Croix, while authorities continue searching for a second suspect, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department.

Janiah Mateo surrendered to officers at the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station Tuesday and was arrested on charges of third-degree assault and disturbance of the peace by fighting, police said. The arrest stems from an alleged June 26 assault in the Little Princess Hill area.

According to the VIPD, Mateo, her mother, Sandra Madrigal, and another unidentified individual allegedly assaulted a woman by punching her in the face, causing injuries. Police said the incident occurred in the vicinity of Little Princess Hill.

Bail for Mateo was set at $25,000. Unable to post bail, she was remanded to the custody of the John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility pending her advice of rights hearing, according to the police report.

Police said Madrigal, 49, remains at large and is wanted on the same charges. She is described as an African American woman who is about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighs approximately 158 pounds, has black hair and brown eyes, and is known to frequent Estate Bellevue.

Anyone with information about Madrigal’s whereabouts is asked to call 911, the Wilbur H. Francis Command at 340-712-6063 or Crime Stoppers USVI at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
