Dunk in Trunk Bay Free on Christmas, Christmas Eve

Dec. 20, 2007 — If you're headed to Trunk Bay on Monday's Christmas Eve or Tuesday's Christmas day, you'll get in for free. V.I. National Park Superintendent Mark Hardgrove said Thursday the park is waiving the entrance fee on both those days because President Bush declared them federal holidays.
"This is a great way to give back to the community during the holiday season and to welcome new visitors to one of our most visited park treasures," Hardgrove said.
He said that in past years, those days were normally fee-free days, but they were not announced to the public. "Why not share it?" Hardgrove said.
Admission to Trunk Bay normally runs $4 per day for people over age 16. Children under 16 are free. An individual annual pass runs $10, with the price for an annual family pass costing $15. Golden Age and Golden Access passport holders pay $2.
Lifeguards and enforcement rangers will be on duty.
While entrance to Trunk Bay may be free, beach goers will still face parking problems when the spaces at Trunk Bay fill up. Hardgrove did not know how many spaces were available.
Hardgrove encouraged beach goers to car pool or take taxis. He said that people could park behind the Visitor's Center in the spaces normally reserved for employees on Monday's Christmas Eve and Tuesday's Christmas Day.
The Visitor's Center in Cruz Bay will close at noon on Monday's Christmas Eve and remain closed on Tuesday's Christmas Day.
The Reef Bay hike, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Monday's Christmas Eve, will go on as scheduled.
All services and facilities will resume on Wednesday.
