RENOVATIONS UNDER WAY AT VESSUP SEWAGE PLANT

0
June 18, 2003 – Major structural repair work is under way at the Vessup wastewater treatment plant in Estate Nazareth to bring the facility into compliance with federal standards.
The work has been undertaken "as part of the directives of the U.S. District Court's consent order," Public Works Wayne Callwood said in a release distributed on Wednesday, and it should be completed by the end of August.
Rusting and deterioration of the walls and joints of the plant tank have "compromised its integrity, the release stated. The facility was designed to process 300,000 gallons of sewage a day, it said, and "during the repair period, the influent flow will be trucked to the Mangrove Lagoon plant on a daily basis for treatment."
According to Callwood, the renovation work includes coating the tank walls with a multi-layered liner called Spectrashield.
"Many of the territory's treatment plants and pump stations are in need of equipment repair or replacement," Callwood said. He said his department is working to comply with the consent order, "as well as providing preventive maintenance to enhance the performance of the sewer collection system."

PERMITS SOUGHT FOR ROAD WIDENING, DRAINAGE

0
June 18, 2003 – The Public Works Department has submitted applications for major Coastal Zone Management permits for two federal highway projects on St. Thomas – widening of Long Bay Road and extension of the Ninth Street drainage system.
Widening Long Bay Road to four lanes from the current two "is part of the high-priority congestion relief objective of our main corridor" in downtown St. Thomas, Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood said in a release.
He said the area involved is between the Lovers Lane intersection and the main entrance to Havensight Mall, going through Mandela Circle. Also as part of the project, he said, the two-lane portion of Centerline Road (also known as Estate Thomas road) between First Avenue and Mandela Circle will be converted to three lanes.
The Ninth Street drainage extension is the final phase of the drainage system, Callwood said. The work will entail construction of "a closed-box culvert outfall from the south edge of Long Bay Road to the ocean, which will help facilitate the proposed development of the Yacht Haven site," he said.

SENATOR MALONE VISITS ST. JOHN TO RECEIVE CONSTITUENT COMPLAINTS
On Thursday, June 19, 2003, Senator Shawn-Michael Malone will be on St. John to field constituent concerns.
"Constituents on St. John have the added burden of two-fared transportation costs when trying to meet with their representatives to discuss issues concerning the island. Too often, this inhibits their accessibility to us to voice their concerns. Yes, communication by telephone and e-mail is available, but these methods fall short of the intimacy found in face-to-face interaction," Senator Malone explained.
"My office has received several calls from constituents on St. John and I believe the number of calls warrants making myself available on the island to listen, discuss and ascertain the concerns of my St. Johnian constituency. It is only a matter of bringing equity to my constituents, while trying to aid in solving issues that possibly would go unheard," Senator Malone added.
Constituents who wish to meet with the Senator can schedule an appointment by calling his office at 639-3529 in advance, or stop by the Legislative Building on St. John between 10am and 4pm when Senator Malone will be available to hear their concerns.
Senator Malone plans to make regular these types of visits to the island and hopes citizens will use this time to meet with him.
