EPA Approves USVI Self-Permitting of Landfills

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Tuesday it has approved the U.S. Virgin Islands’ municipal solid waste landfill permit program, allowing the territory to manage its landfills and expand or create new ones.

Waste Management Problems Pile Up With No Clean Answer

The V. I. Waste Management Authority is $24 million in debt and facing a budget cut of 17 percent. Sen. Novelle Francis at Tuesday's Senate Committee on Finance budget hearing called the situation a travesty. 'We need to pay these people,' he said.

EPA Seeks Public Comment on Solid Waste Management Proposal

Around 25 people attended a Tuesday town hall meeting hosted by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency at the Florence Williams Library in Christiansted in order to hear comments about the V.I. taking responsibility for its solid waste landfills.

Judge Calls WMA Landfill Progress Impressive but Inadequate

When Adrian Taylor, the interim director of the Waste Management Authority, appeared in federal court on Tuesday, he reported progress taking place at the territory’s two landfills. District Court Judge Curtis Gomez called the efforts impressive.
