The Virgin Islands will host the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors in 2002, Lt. Gov. Gerard Luz James announced Monday.
Neither a date nor a hotel site has been selected yet, said James' spokeswoman, Jerain Fleming.
However, she said the office has checked with various locations on St. Croix and is satisfied the island can accommodate the 150 to 200 people who generally attend the annual conference.
The Virgin Islands made its pitch for the honor last week at the conference in Puerto Rico, competing against Las Vegas, Nev. James made the V.I. presentation and the executive director for tourism in Nevada spoke for that state. The executive committee of the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors voted in favor of the Virgin Islands.
James also was elected a member-at-large of the executive committee of the NCLG, representing the Eastern Region.
He attended last week's conference accompanied by his wife, his bodyguard and three staff members. There was still no word Monday on the cost of the trip.
Next year's conference will be held June 27 to July 1 in Louisville, Ky.
