Dec. 14, 2007 — The Players Choice took a two games to one lead in the best three-of-five womens softball finals on Wednesday at the DC Canegata ballpark by whipping the Thymes 18-11.
It is the Players Choice second consecutive win after dropping the opener. They can now wrap up the championship on Friday with a win over their archrivals.
Batting first, the Thymes got on the board right away with two runs on a sac fly by Shay Roberts and an RBI single off the bat of Marisol Somme. Players Choice answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI ground out by Pat Smith, an RBI single by Arlene Santiago and a Thymes error to lead 3-2 after one inning.
After the Thymes failed to score in the top of the second, Players Choice erupted for five runs for an 8-2 lead and they did not look back. They scored five runs on a two-run single by Jewel Velez, an RBI single by Melissa Schjang and two Thymes errors.
Zahra OReilly two-run single in the top of the third brought the Thymes two runs closer at 8-4, but the Players Choice answered with eight runs, to put the game out of reach at 16-4, on RBI ground outs by Marie Encarnacion and Sonia Soto and four costly Thymes errors.
The Thymes made the score looked a bit more respectable by plating four runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Inocencia Messer, a sac fly by OReilly, an RBI ground out by Jennifer Brady and an error on the Players Choice left fielder. They trailed 16-8 at the end of four complete innings as the Players Choice failed to score in their half of the inning.
An unearned run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning completed the scoring for the Thymes, while Players Choice picked up an unearned run in the fifth and one on an RBI single in the sixth to complete their scoring for the game and an 18-11 victory.
Marie Encarnacion pitched the win for the Players Choice, while Brady got the loss for the Thymes. Top hitters for the Players Choice were, Velez, 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Schjang and Encarnacion were 2 for 5 with one RBI apiece. For the Thymes, Dianne Petersen was 3 for 5, and Roberts was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
