The St. John Youth Committee is hosting the “St. John Youth Committee Positive Summit and Rally for Peace and Change” from 5:30-9 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 14, at the V.I National Park Ball Field.
The members of the committee believe that now is the time to make positive changes for the youth of St. John, and the rally intends to empower the youth of the island and provide an opportunity for them to engage in a dialogue that identifies problems and finds solutions.
Cheryl Francis, who represents the “Stop the Bleeding” campaign, will be the keynote speaker. All of the territory’s senators and commissioners have been invited to attend and listen to the young people voice their questions, comments and concerns.
Various community members, businesses and social groups will be hosting tables and dispersing information to the youth. This networking session will begin at 4:30 and last for the remainder of the event.
There will be free food and drinks. The St. John villagers will share their wealth of knowledge, skills and opportunities. Scotiabank, the Coral Bay Community Council, the Friends of the Park and many others have agreed to reach out and show the young people they care about them. Everyone is invited to come out and get involved; and they can host a table if they feel as though they have something to offer St. John’s youth.
The event will also feature a panel. The St. John Youth Committee is selecting the people in the community that it feels are best equipped to engage them in a positive, candid discussion about the following topics: Sex and Health Education, Safety and Non-Violence, Education, Career Planning, sports and recreation, personal development, spiritual development, a government representative, an adult representative, a community elder, and a youth representative. Guy Benjamin, a local historian, author and wise elder, has agreed to serve as the community elder panelist.
Scotiabank will host a "You’ve Got the Power" free financial seminar at their St. John branch at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19. The seminar will include discussions on how to prepare for a secure financial future; discovering the many perks of a career in banking; savings: how much is right for me?; credit card vs. debit card; and auto loans: what’s involved?
Community members are urged to support the rally by purchasing a $150 sign that states their positive intention for the youth of the island, donating food or drinks for the village potluck, volunteering their time and energy, or simply coming out to the summit.
