National Honor Society Inducts 7 Gifft Hill School Students

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students.

Gifft Hill School has announced the selection of seven 10th and 11th graders to the Gifft Hill School Chapter of the National Honor Society. Ki’Janne Alfred, Siera Boynes, Kaitlyn Foust, Maya DiGiacomo, Lunique Henley, Ananda Hernandez, Lily Porter and Amelia Ray are being recognized for the commitment to excellence in both academics and school life, as well as broader community engagement and work.

An induction ceremony will be held at 8:20 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Gifft Hill School Atrium, upper campus.

“We are so proud of these young women and the honor they are receiving,” said Dr. Paul Johnson, head of school. “Their diligence, hard work and strength of character are an asset to Gifft Hill School and our island community. We look forward to watching them grow and pave exciting futures.”

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

About Gifft Hill School Founded in 1978, Gifft Hill School believes in using the school’s gardens, the island’s National Park, and the ocean as living laboratories to inspire and engage its students with creative project-based instruction. As a member of National Association of Independent Schools, the non-profit school provides education to some 140 students from St. John and St. Thomas in preschool through 12th grade on the island of St. John.

After the storms, Gifft Hill School waived tuition and opened its doors beyond its student body to offer a sense of normalcy to as many children as possible, and to support parents as they rebuild. In the 2018-2019 school year, thanks to philanthropic support, over 80% of Gifft Hill’s student body will receive financial assistance as the community continues to recover.
